Nurse Practitioner Presents in Amsterdam 
On April 1, 2004, Carol Flavell, NP, spoke at the European Society of Cardiovascular 
Nurses Conference in Amsterdam. Presenting to an audience made up of nurses from 
all over Western Europe, Flavell discussed current literature on end-of-life care 
for patients with heart failure. She addressed how heart failure patient needs 
differ from the hospice model of cancer patients, and proposed that hospice/palliative 
care nurses team up with cardiovascular nurses to best attend to heart failure 
patients nearing the end of life. Said Flavell: “We have the privilege to 
escort patients and families over the thin places—we must learn to do it 
well.”
