The Brigham Cancer Warriors are stepping up to the challenge extended by other Boston hospitals to see who can recruit the most members and raise the most money for Boston’s first annual Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk on Oct. 15. Edward Whang, MD, associate surgeon in General and Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Mike Abramson, MD, are leading the BWH team.
“Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest of all human cancers,” Whang said. “BWH’s participation in this walk will provide funding for our researchers to pursue their goal of developing strategies for early detection of the disease at a curable stage.”
BWH researchers are actively working on developing new detection methods and therapies for pancreatic cancer. Currently, in most patients this disease is identified too late, and on average, patients live less than a year after being diagnosed. With early detection and diagnosis, doctors can begin treatment and increase the life expectancy of pancreatic cancer patients.
The Brigham Cancer Warriors have a lot of support from Quinta Anderson, whose husband Norm was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2004, received treatment at BWH and unfortunately died within nine months. “The doctors at the Brigham were personable, informative and supportive, and so were the teams behind them,” Anderson said. “BWH is a hospital with a big heart.”
The Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk is Sunday, Oct. 15, at Carson Beach. For more information, contact Mike Abramson at mabramson1@partners.org, or visit http://bostonpancreaticcancerwalk.kintera.org and click on “more” at the bottom right corner of the Web page to search for BWH’s team.
