Tower Escalator Project Update
As part of the construction project to install up and down escalators in the Tower Lobby, the pedestrian bridge between the Tower and the Amory Building will be dismantled beginning Saturday, and the Kessler Health Education Library will close for approximately six weeks, from Nov. 15 to Jan. 2.
Library staff and resources, including Kessler’s 100 most popular titles, will remain available to patients and families in the Bretholtz Center for Patients and Families. During this temporary period, Kessler Library services will be available in Bretholtz Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Library programs and classes for patients and families will be held in various locations throughout the hospital. Special arrangements, such as an extended borrowing period, will also be in place, said Cara Helfner, chief librarian and program manager in Kessler.
“We hope you can come in and take advantage of this long loan period,” Helfner said. The library’s collection and additional resources will be available in the Shapiro training room on L1 by appointment only.
The move is necessary as part of the installation of escalators in the Tower Lobby. The floor above the Kessler Library will be reinforced as part of the extended second floor connecting the Nesson Pike extension to the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center.
The dismantling of the second-floor Tower-to-Amory bridge begins Saturday. The 75 Francis Lobby Committee has worked closely with Central Transport Services to plan alternate routes for transporting patients between Tower units and Endoscopy, Dialysis, Dental and Vascular during this time. Also, there will be signs posted throughout the area to direct patients, visitors and staff to alternate routes.
Also, as of today (Friday, Nov. 9), valet services for patients and visitors dropping off and picking up their cars at 75 Francis St. will be available from a new valet desk in the Tower Lobby waiting area near the entrance to the ED.
