Robert Goldszer gives Mission Park resident Lisa Louie a flu shot.
Nearly 45 senior citizens and other Roxbury Tenants of Harvard residents dropped by Mission Park’s Flynn House Community Room on Monday afternoon for free flu shots, courtesy of BWH.
“Receiving a flu shot is the most important thing you can do to prevent the flu,” said Robert Goldszer, MD, MBA, associate chief medical officer and director of Primary Care at BWH, who administered the shots. “When you’re elderly, you can also have a lot of complications from the flu, so it’s important to take measures to prevent it.”
Senior citizens at Mission Park, which is part of Roxbury Tenants of Harvard, have been getting their flu shots right at home for nearly 20 years, thanks to a BWH initiative led by John McGonagle, director of Community Affairs in BWH’s Center for Community Health and Health Equity.
“John is our hero,” said Theresa Parks, senior coordinator for RTH. “We really appreciate this service. It’s easy for people to come here and get a shot, especially as it gets colder and harder to go out.”
Taking precautions against the flu now will help many seniors avoid trips to the Emergency Department as a result of the flu or flu-related complications.
“We are glad to be able to provide this service to our neighbors in the Roxbury Tenants of Harvard,” McGonagle said.
The flu vaccine is available for employees through March 31, 2008, in Occupational Health at the Neville House, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Visit www.bwhpikenotes.org/fluupdate for more information on employee flu clinics and a flu podcast.
