Before each shift, Patient Care Assistant Genny Glennon makes sure every patient room is properly stocked and that family waiting areas have Kleenex and fresh pitchers of water. When she encounters a patient’s family, she offers a cup of coffee or asks if she can get something for them. If her unit needs to fill the role of a unit coordinator or a patient sitter, she offers her service without being asked.
“She is that thought in the back of your mind, the extra hand that you need, the kind word or gesture or smile just when you need it,” said Kathleen Leone, MBA, RN, nursing director of the MICU, who nominated Glennon for the PCA of the Year Award.
Glennon received the award during the 2010 PCA/ESA and MA of the Year Award ceremony last month.
Stephanie Cullen of the Center for Pain Management and Interventional Physiatry at Foxborough received the Medical Assistant of the Year award, and Ronee Lewis-Straker of the Emergency Department was recognized as Emergency Service Assistant of the Year.
“The dedication and commitment that each PCA, ESA and MA brings to their job every day helps us offer the best care to our patients and their families,” Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services, told the packed Bornstein Amphitheater.
During the ceremony, Nursing and Patient Care Services leadership recognized the nearly 35 PCAs, ESAs and MAs who were nominated.
In a nomination letter, Foxborough staff detailed how Cullen is an integral member of her practice’s team. “Stephanie greets each patient with her warm and charismatic personality. She takes the time to listen to patients, even when she is busy,” wrote nurses Mary Pare, RN, Kelly Strange, RN, and Pam Aggerbeck, BSN, RN. “She does her job well and works hard to be a great team member. The proof of this is our high number of satisfied patients.”
Lewis-Straker also received accolades from her team. “Ronee is caring, compassionate and very effective in her role,” said Alice King, MS, RN, CEN, assistant nursing director in the Emergency Department. “She is responsive to the needs of the patients and ED team and does a great job orienting new staff when called upon. She is a role model for all ESA staff.”
