Micheline Mathews-Roth, MD, a researcher in the Channing Labratory, was among women attending the luncheon.
Nearly 40 women gathered in the Shapiro Breakout Room June 23 for a luncheon celebrating BWH women’s achievements. Carol Nadelson, MD, director of the Office for Women’s Careers, addressed the room of fellows and faculty to celebrate a number of accomplishments, ranging from awards, honors and appointments to promotions, grants and patent awards.
“This list has expanded from few to many pages,” Nadelson told the women in attendance, holding up a green book—published annually by the OWC—that contains a list of achievements of women at BWH, including publications, teaching, professional service, community service, clinical activities and pioneer achievements.
“We now have 35 full professors who are women, a number that is a positive increase,” said Nadelson. “We are looking forward to many more in the future.”
In addition to the rising number of female full professors—which is at 15 percent, up from 13 percent in 2008—four of the 35 female full professors have named chairs.
Nadelson urged the women in attendance to continue to make strides. “We need to work on diversity and balance, making sure we have representation on policy making committees,” she said.
“We do have a number of women professors, and we want everybody to continue to feel there is a great range of ways to achieve success,” said Barbara Bierer, MD, senior vice president of Research and director of the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. “We need to continue to support that, and do our best to ensure that the policies at Harvard are encompassing the kinds of careers we have chosen.”
BWH and MGH established the Offices for Women’s Careers in 1997 to recruit and retain women MDs and PhDs, to encourage women in research careers and to promote women academically in the university, medical school and hospitals, as well as to increase the number of women in leadership positions. Since its inception, the OWC has joined the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity at BWH. For more information, visit www.brighamandwomens.org/CFDD/
