Vincent M. Vacca Jr., MSN, RN, CCRN, nurse educator for the Neurosciences ICU, published an article illustrating the importance of people having a current, available list of medications when they arrive at the hospital expectedly or unexpectedly. Physicians and nurses can review the list so that an important medication, such as eye drops for glaucoma, is not neglected for several days while other more obvious medical conditions, such as a heart attack, are being treated. Unless medical personnel are aware of a patient’s medications, the patient might not receive them. A patient with glaucoma—the leading cause of blindness in the U.S.—might not get the eye drops if they can’t communicate and well-meaning health care providers are unaware of the condition.

Vacca also published an article reviewing epidemiological statistics on bacterial meningitis—specifically meningococcal meningitis—and its signs, symptoms and complications, as well as who is at risk, the tests that diagnose the disease, treatment and suggestions for prevention.
