When Patricia Fuller-Murray wanted to advance her career, she found the tools she needed right here at BWH in the form of Workforce Development’s School at Work program.
“The program helped me not be afraid to learn,” said the unit coordinator, who enrolled at Fisher College after completing School at Work last year. “I was out of school for so many years but after the program, I realized that I still had the drive to obtain my bachelor’s degree.”
School at Work provides an opportunity for entry-level employees at BWH to build on their skills and advance to higher positions within the hospital. It also prepares them to go back to school.
The program is enrolling candidates for its next cycle of classes, which starts in September. This year, the program improved its curriculum by adding 30 minutes to the weekly class in order to shorten the eight-month program to six months.
“We’re hoping that this will open the door to even more people looking to jumpstart their careers,” said Lisa Chodos, Workforce Development’s career coach.
Classes meet Wednesdays from 3 to 5:30 p.m., but Chodos said candidates should not be discouraged if they work afternoon or evening shifts. “No matter the situation, if you want to learn and enroll, we can find a way to make it work,” said Chodos.
