This year, Brendon Belfon, a secretary in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), recieved more than a dozen nominations from his colleagues for a Partners In Excellence Award. It is easy to see why.
Belfon makes it a point to remember names. In a fast-paced environment with 30 nurses on shift, he completes any and every task from start to finish. He often arrives at the hospital early simply because he enjoys the environment.
For these reasons, he is one of the faces of The Brigham Way, a new campaign appearing on the TV screens around the BWH campus.
The Brigham Way is defined by the staff at BWH. It is the ways BWHers go above and beyond to make the hospital a better place for all who come through its doors. The Brigham Way is how people who make up Brigham and Women’s Hospital are putting their own touches on customer service and teamwork.
Dennie Butler-Mackay’s Brigham Way is empowering patients to see the opportunities in their challenges. As a social worker at the Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center, Butler-Mackay greets patients with a handshake, but may leave them with a hug.
The waiting room is filled with patients, children playing on the floor and moms and dads milling around, checking in and chatting on phones. Behind the closed door of her office, the noise of the outside world disappears as Butler-Mackay connects with patients.
“If you look at things from a strength-based perspective, there is more opportunity,” she says. “For patients, I try to re-frame things and shift the lens of their thinking.”
Staying positive was also how Monica Baytos, financial analyst in the Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology, found her Brigham Way. When two members in her department left, she stepped up to fill the gaps in the team.
“If someone asks me a question, I follow through,” she says. “If I do it, then next time others will help me out the same way. It’s teamwork.”
Throughout BWH, many employees and volunteers find their own Brigham Way to contribute to their team or patients. It can be as simple as taking a minute or two to help someone find their way on the Pike.
Tell us how you or your colleagues go above and beyond to make the Brigham an even better place to work, visit and receive care. To submit your Brigham Way or nominate a colleague, email TheBrighamWay@partners.org.
