Farmer Shares Dire Health Status in Haiti
Paul Farmer, MD, PhD, chief of BWH’s Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities, was the guest speaker at the March 29 MSO/BWPO Quarterly Meeting. In his presentation “An Update from Rural Haiti,” Farmer exposed the health crisis in that country. According to sources Farmer referenced, Haiti has the highest infant and maternal mortality, the worst malnutrition and the worst AIDS situation in the Americas. Farmer told the Bornstein Amphitheater audience that nearly 50 percent of the 8.3 million people living in Haiti are malnourished. He also told of how BWH’s Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities is doing its part to help address these dire health conditions.
