Obituary: Dr. Leonard Safon
Leonard E. Safon, MD, passed away on Sunday, March 28, in Florida. An active member of the BWH Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 1961, Safon influenced the hospital’s practice of obstetrics by demonstrating a complete devotion to his patients, by emphasizing the importance of multi-disciplinary teamwork, and by showing great generosity to students and residents. During his 40 years of practice, he received the best teacher of obstetrics award more than ten times. The award was eventually renamed in his honor as the Leonard E. Safon Award for Teaching of Obstetrics.
“Dr. Safon was a trusted colleague and a good friend,” said Robert Barbieri, MD, chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “He will be greatly missed by all of his friends at BWH.”
Safon’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Leonard E. Safon MD lectureship fund in Clinical Obstetrics, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, c/o Development Office, 116 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02116 or Temple Aliyah, 1664 Central Avenue, Needham, MA 02492.
