Mandatory Workplace Professionalism Training Underway
The BWH is committed to providing a workplace conducive to optimal staff performance and free from inappropriate, unprofessional behavior. To that end, all 3,500 physicians, researchers, residents, fellows and physician assistants at BWH must complete workplace professionalism training by January 2006.
BWH is conducting two-hour education sessions on the topic as a way to improve the environment by enhancing awareness of unprofessional behavior and its consequences and fulfill its obligation to protect employees from workplace harassment.
A total of 33 physician leaders have been selected as professionalism officers to carry out the train-the-trainer format and act as liaisons to senior management. The professionalism officers will work to gather and document facts, help direct staff to the appropriate resources and, most importantly, help to set a consistent, respectful tone in their respective areas.
Approximately 750 have already attended training sessions. Several departments, including Surgery and Medicine, are working to set up monthly sessions in the coming months to accommodate those who have not yet completed training.
