BRI Launched

After two years of planning and collaboration across all departments and disciplines, BWH in October celebrated the launch of the Biomedical Research Institute (BRI), which brings together all BWH research under an umbrella of unprecedented cooperation.
BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, outlined the vision of the BRI and, before a packed Bornstein Ampitheater, introduced the Institute's directors: Thomas Kupper, MD, chairman of the Department of Dermatology, is BRI director; Cynthia Morton, PhD, Cytogenetics director, is BRI co-director; and Joseph Loscalzo, MD, PhD, chairman of the Department of Medicine, is BRI vice director. The directors serve on the BRI executive committee with Barbara Bierer, MD, senior vice president of Research.
“The opening of the Biomedical Research Institute is opportunity – the opportunity to take another step forward, to work together, to offer leadership though achievements and to link discovery with the best care for all those who will benefit,” Gottlieb said.
The BRI will bring many advantages to the research community. It will provide researchers in all departments access to advanced technology and platforms individual departments could not afford on their own. The Institute will foster an interdisciplinary sharing of ideas across the natural boundaries that separate various departments and incubate career advancement and growth for investigators. And, the BRI will strengthen the hospital's position to secure research funding from public and private sources.
“We're not talking about changing what you do everyday. We're talking about helping you do what you do everyday,” Gottlieb said. “And we are building on what we do very well.”
Kupper, on behalf of the BRI directors, said, “We are honored to lead this ambitious enterprise, humbled by the breadth, depth and talent of our brilliant scientists and clinicians, and excited by the limitless possibilities ahead. The BRI will succeed because of the extraordinary talent, enthusiasm and commitment of the scientists and clinicians at BWH.”
