Honoring the Medical Staff
BWH celebrated the contributions and service of the medical staff with awards, dinner and dancing at the 2005 Physician Recognition Dinner, which was co-hosted by the Brigham and Women’s Physician Organization and the Physicians’ Council. BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, and BWPO President and CEO Troy Brennan, MD, MPH, welcomed medical staff and guests to the Nov. 5 event at the Fairmont Copley Plaza.
“Our medical staff and scientists are unsurpassed in talent and knowledge and their depth of compassion and commitment to health care,” said Gottlieb, citing several of the many contributions of medical staff, including assistance in disaster relief efforts, establishment of health care programs in Haiti and Rwanda and dedication to providing care to the local community. “The medical staff continuously give this rich and generous gift to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, our community and the world.”
Five doctors were presented with prestigious BWPO Physician Recognition Awards. “These physicians demonstrate leadership, innovation and community service consistent with BWH’s mission,” said Allen Smith, MD, MS, BWPO chief medical officer. This year’s winners were recognized for, among other contributions, developing a radiation oncology program in Fall River, linking with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to coordinate care of oncology patients, coordinating surgical care between BWH and HVMA and Faulkner Hospital and developing a technique to treat a common GI condition.
Stan Ashley, MD, received the Clinical Collaboration Award; David Carr-Locke, MD, FRCP, and John Saltzman, MD, received the Clinical Innovation Award; and Rita Linggood, MD, received the Clinical Community Service Award. This year, the BWPO renamed its leadership award in honor of the late James Winshall, MD, former medical director of the Brigham Circle Medical Associates and a proven leader of the BWH community. Christopher Fletcher, MD, received this year’s James S. Winshall Leadership Award.
Leonard S. Lilly, MD, co-chair of the Physicians’ Council and Chief of Brigham and Women’s/ Faulkner Cardiology, announced awards to physicians for years of service to the Brigham in increments of five years, ranging from five to 35 years. Joseph Corson, MD, was honored for 50 years of service; Donald Goldstein, MD, was honored for 45 years of service; and Kenneth H. Falchuck, MD, and Warren Jay Becker, MD, were honored for 40 years of service.
The names of all present and past winners of the BWPO Physician Recognition Awards are displayed on a new plaque in the lobby at 75 Francis St.
