Awards and Honors
Katrina Bickerstaff, BSN, RN, CPAN, CAPA, of the PACU, was recently elected treasurer for the American Society of PeriAnesthsia Nurses (ASPAN). Bickerstaff will serve in this capacity for two years.
Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, FAAN, FAHA, chief operating officer and executive vice president of BWH, was named a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing – a group of the country’s most accomplished nursing leaders in education, management, practice and research.

Luis Araujo |
Luis Araujo, BSN, RN, CEN, of Shapiro 6 West, earned his certification in emergency nursing from the AACN.
Jeanette Cote, MSN, RN, CPAN, and Deidre Devaux, MSN, RN, CPAN, both of the PACU, became certified in post-anesthesia nursing.
Karen Lamping, MSN, RN, of the Medical Cardiology Intermediate Care Unit, recently earned her MSN from UMass Boston and NP certification from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
Ann Leary, MA, BSN, RN-BC of the PACU, earned her master’s degree in Critical and Creative Thinking from UMASS Boston.
Andrea Sablosky, BSN, RN, CCRN, and Lindsay Gardner, BSN, RN, CCRN, both of the Surgical ICU and the IV team, earned their CCRN certification.
Robert Veilleux, BSN, RN, of the PACU, graduated from UMass Boston with a bachelor’s degree of Science in Nursing.

Vince Vacca |
Vince Vacca, MSN, RN, CCRN, of the Neuroscience ICU, presented ‘Neurological Assessment, Monitoring and Treatment Following Neurological Injuries’ at the Greater Boston Chapter of AACN in September. He also presented ‘Neurological Assessment following Traumatic Brain Injury’ at the 32nd Annual Neuro-Rehabilitation Conference organized by Braintree Rehabilitation in November.

Margaret Costello |
Margaret Costello, PhD, RN, of Tower 15CD, presented ‘Translating Preceptorship into Practice’ at the Northeast Regional Veterans Administration Nurses Alliance in November. Costello also teamed up with Tower 15CD staff nurse Mary Allendorf, BSN, RN, and CWN staff nurse Josephine Faller, MSN, RN, to present ‘Nurses providing spiritual care at the bedside’ at the third annual Spirituality and Nursing Conference co-sponsored by BWH and MGH.

Cynthia Loring |
A research project by CWN-10 staff nurses, entitled “Tub Bathing Improves Thermoregulation of the Late Preterm Infant,” has been accepted for publication in The Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nurses. (See related story on cover.) The project authors are staff nurses Cynthia Loring, RN, principal investigator, Katherine Gregory, RN, Haley Nurse Scientist, Barbara Gargan, RN, Valerie LeBlanc, RN, Debora Lundgren, RN, Jean Reilly, RN, Cathleen Walker, RN, Claire Zaya, RN, and Kristin Stobo, research assistant.

Barbara Lakatos |
Barbara Lakatos, DNP, PMHCNS-BC, Psychiatric Nursing Resource Service program director, was elected to The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) Board of Commissioners. The CCNE is an autonomous accrediting agency contributing to the improvement of public health. CCNE ensures the quality and integrity of baccalaureate and graduate degree nursing education programs and post-baccalaureate nurse residency programs. Lakatos will represent practicing nurses.
Margaret Costello, PhD, RN, Caprie Bell, BSN, RN, of 15CD, Jennefer Trower Smith, RN, and Hallie Greenberg, MS-PREP, RN, BSN, BC, wrote “Management of the hospitalized patient experiencing acute or chronic pain: A case study,” which was accepted for publication in Pain Management Nursing. Costello also published ‘The Use of Simulation in Medication Calculation Instruction: A Pilot Study’ in the latest issue of Nurse Educator.
