Matt Quin, MSN, RN, was honored by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) with the Circle of Excellence Award. Presented to just 25 nurses per year, the award recognizes those who exemplify excellence in the care of acutely and critically ill patients and their families.
Quin, the nursing director of the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit, was nominated for his exceptional leadership. He has developed several initiatives to improve patient outcomes, including a new throughput and bed expansion process, which enables the unit to flex up to four beds as needed. This has helped to eliminate Operating Room delays and canceled cases.
According to his nomination, he has created and maintained an environment that fosters teamwork and professional practice advancement among nurses. “Matt’s style of inclusiveness and effective leadership inspire others to be innovators and stretch beyond their comfort zone to achieve excellence,” said Maria Bentain-Melanson, MSN, RN, nurse educator. “Through his guidance and encouragement, our unit’s membership to professional organizations increased from 45 to 88 percent, and the number of CCRN-certified nurses has risen over the past three years.”
Quin is respected not only by his nurse colleagues, but also by physicians and other members of the multidisciplinary care team.
“Matt exemplifies all the best qualities of a nurse leader,” said Chief of Cardiac Surgery Chip Bolman, III, MD. “He is totally devoted to patients and families. He is an ardent defender and advocate for his staff, and he works collaboratively with all members of the health care team, insisting on a highly respectful and collegial environment in the ICU.”
Under Quin’s leadership, the Cardiac Surgery ICU has received the AACN’s Beacon Award for Excellence for two straight years. It is the only adult intensive care unit in New England to achieve the award’s gold status.
Quin will be honored in May 2012 at the National Teaching Institute conference in Orlando, Fla.
