Dear Nurse Colleague:
This month, we have the opportunity to recognize the outstanding contributions the nursing profession makes to the patients at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Nursing Recognition Week is our chance to review our accomplishments over the past year and reinvigorate our individual and collective goals moving forward.
All year long, but particularly during May, I am reminded of the thrills of our profession and the impact we make on the lives of countless patients and families. Appreciation exhibited through letters, contributions, or a simple word of thanks is a consistent reminder of why we are here to do what we do. I remain humbled and honored by the strengths of our talented staff as described through the eyes of those we care for and provide support to.
I applaud the five finalists for the 2004 Mary S. Fay Essence of Nursing Award. Gabriele Harrison, Ginny Silva, Suzanne Lieberman, Helen Cluett, and Carol Richard represent some of the finest attributes in nursing today, at BWH and elsewhere. We are fortunate to have such talent and skill at BWH and I appreciate all nurses’ efforts to continue to raise the standards we set for ourselves. I am proud of the way in which we all approach our roles to keep those standards alive, as they set the pace for other nursing leagues in Boston and across the nation.
Your commitment to BWH and the health care industry is evident to all who witness and benefit from your skills and talents. It is always inspiring to observe the fast pace and quick resolve of the ED nurse, to appreciate the tender touch and specialized expertise of a NICU nurse, to recognize the true gifts of the oncology nurse as he or she shepherds a anxious family member through the treatment course of a loved one, or to watch a labor and delivery nurse coach a first time mother and father through the birthing process.
Thank you for all your hard work throughout the year and congratulations on a job well done.
Sincerely,

Nancy Kruger, DNSc, RN
