Future in Motion The Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center at BWH

A ctivity is well underway for the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center at the site at 70 Francis St. Preparation work is being completed to reroute the portion of Francis Street in front of the hospital's main entrance onto the current construction site.

The temporary Francis Street relocation, which begins June 26, will enable work to be done on the underground floors (L1 and L2) that will connect BWH's existing main campus with the new center. As the construction is being conducted “under” Francis Street, police details will ensure traffic flow. The rerouted portion of Francis Street is planned to reopen in late October 2005.

“This is a critically important, multi-year project, which will undoubtedly test the patience of our patients, their families and our staff, from time-to-time,” said Kate Walsh, chief operating officer. “The end result will be a building that will help transform our hospital, so your forbearance and support is much appreciated.”

According to Arthur Mombourquette, vice president of Support Services, BWH continues to collaborate with local officials and neighborhood representatives to limit construction impacts, including traffic disruptions on the surrounding Francis, Binney, Fenwood and Vining streets. In addition, “We are committed to maintaining a safe environment for our patients, staff and visitors,” he said.
