BWHers who served in the Armed Forces and their colleagues gathered last Friday for a celebration of Veterans Day and the 232nd Marine Corps Birthday.
“This event gives us time to pause and think of those who have served, those currently overseas and the impact on their families at home,” said Chief Medical Officer Anthony Whittemore, MD, a U.S. Navy veteran. “We also remember those who served and will never come back.”
During the celebration, Robert Donaghue, operations manager for Security and Parking and a retired Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps, symbolically passed his sword to Whittemore to cut a giant cake decorated to resemble a flag.
Brigadier General Marie Field, MS, RN, nurse educator in the NICU, spoke briefly after the National Anthem was played. “Every time I hear it, the National Anthem gives me goose bumps and a sense of pride,” said Field, who retired from the Air Force U.S. Reserves this year after 29 years of distinguished service.
