Executive Director of Business Services for Patient Care Services Leo F. Buckley, Jr., lives by the motto he learned from his father: “If you do something kind for someone, you’ll have a good day.”
For the past 15 years, Buckley has gone above and beyond to empower staff, solve problems creatively and demonstrate those powerful acts of kindness his father emphasized. For his commitment to staff, patients and the organization, Buckley was awarded the 2012 Patient Care Services Thomson Compassionate Care Leadership Award.
“Leo is known as the go-to person for staff at all levels and is well respected throughout the hospital,” said Jackie Somerville, PhD, RN, senior vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer.
The Thomson Compassionate Care Leadership Award recognizes the legacy of the late Dennis Thomson, former vice president of BWH Public Affairs. It is awarded to a BWHer who demonstrates the qualities of caring, competency, commitment and courage in their interactions with patients, families and staff.
Buckley’s nomination included commentaries from those who, for the past decade, have benefited from his leadership and devotion to the institution, his colleagues and the patients and families who are cared for at the Brigham.
“Not only does he take time to listen to your problems, he is always eager to discuss new ideas and new ways to do things,” wrote one nominator.
Another noted, “He empowers us to be the best that we can be and always leads by example.”
After receiving the award, Buckley thanked his colleagues and family, including his wife, Deb; children Leo, Ashley and Matthew; and his parents, who were all present for the award ceremony.
“I’m sincerely grateful and truly honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Buckley. “I had the good fortune and great honor to know Dennis Thomson, and because of that, receiving this award means a great deal to me.”
He added, “The Brigham is full of wonderful leaders, compassionate care givers and dedicated individuals. There are role models and mentors who ensure BWH offers the best care to patients and their families. Today, I’m honored to be counted among you.”
