At right, panelists Joseph Camillus, administrative director in the Department of Emergency Medicine; Wanda McClain, executive director in the Center for Community Health and Health Equity; Vincent McDermott, BWH controller and Faulkner executive director of Finance; Art Mombourquette, vice president of Support Services; and Jacqueline Slavik, PhD, executive director of the Biomedical Research Institute.
Meghan Carroll has been at BWH for just six months, but she already knows of a long list of career growth resources available to her at the hospital.
“There are mentors that can guide you, career developing programs that allow you to grow professionally and the BWH Young Professionals group, where you can network with other BWHers,” said Carroll, a credentialing administrator in the Department of Provider Services.
Last month, she was among young professionals throughout the organization to gather in the Shapiro Breakout Room for “Paths to Excellence—Professional Career Panel,” hosted by the BWH Young Professionals group.
Moderated by Sharon Vitti, vice president of Women’s Health and Ambulatory Services, a panel of staff from different areas of the hospital shared the experiences, decisions and circumstances that led them to their current roles. They also discussed ideas about how the next generation of health care leaders can position themselves for success.
“As you’re starting your career, it’s important that you don’t think of it as looking up, but rather, looking ahead,” said Art Mombourquette, vice president of Support Services
Others provided tips for when young professionals come to a professional crossroads. “Talk to your mentors or others around the hospital. When you do a good job people notice, and that will open the door to other opportunities,” said Jacqueline Slavik, PhD, executive director of the Biomedical Research Institute.
This was the first major event sponsored by the BWH Young Professionals, a BWH Organizational Development & Learning affinity group that fosters growth, improves retention and creates a sense of community among BWH’s young professionals.
“I believe everyone who attended the talk left feeling encouraged about the opportunities at BWH and that we have support from senior management and leadership,” said Vincent Speenburgh, BWPO credentialing administrator, who co-chaired the event with Andrea Shellman, a consultant in the Center for Clinical Excellence.
Shellman attributed the event’s success to the panelists’ willingness to share anecdotes and career tips. “Not only did they have unique stories, but there were also common themes that echoed in the speakers’ responses. Many people can identify with their stories in one way or another,” she said.
Vitti, who sponsors the group, added, “To have a room packed with young professionals who are hungry to take the next step and listen to career advice says so much about their dedication and the quality of our staff here at BWH.”
