Lorraine Figelski, RN, visits with former NICU patients Edrick and Euriel Mercedes and their parents.
Twins Euriel and Edrick Mercedes celebrated their second birthday with a bit of a twist on tradition: giving presents instead of receiving them. Former BWH NICU patients themselves, the twins and their parents expressed gratitude for the care they received by bringing gifts of toys, blankets and cake to families currently in the NICU.
When they were born in November of 2008, Edrick weighed two pounds, four ounces, and Euriel weighed just two ounces more. As the boys received care in the NICU, parents Erick and Dorkenya Mercedes of Dorchester appreciated seeing children who also began their life in the NICU come back to visit the unit.
“The family really wants to give back to other parents in the unit today by giving them some hope,” said Assistant Nursing Director Julianne Mazzawi, MSN, RN. “It’s wonderful for the staff to see the twins doing so well, too.”
