LMR Training Available for Physicians
Roll out of the Longitudinal Medical Record (LMR) continues this year in BWH specialty practices with the goal of giving every outpatient provider access. As of March, about 2,595 total users have access, including 650 physicians and staff in all primary care practices and most specialty services. Most recently, Cardiac Surgery, Interventional Radiology and the Brigham Primary Care Associates of Brookline have been added.
By the end of fiscal year 2006, an additional 100 physician users and 150 staff users will gain access to the LMR.
The LMR is the ambulatory electronic medical record system used across Partners Healthcare System. It allows the physicians to maintain the patient record electronically and manage the patient care. Providers can easily share data with other clinicians involved in the patient’s care across Partners to facilitate the communication and ensure the continuity of care. Primary care doctors and specialists can view each other’s data.
Each provider can view the patient’s current medications, allergies, and notes others have written. This ensures that all of the patient’s care providers are on the same page and making decisions based on the most accurate and up to date information.
“E-prescribing is a critical part of our efforts to improve outpatient safety and quality and to treat our patients in the most cost effective manner,” Allen Smith, MD, MS, chief medical officer of the BWPO.
Since LMR roll out began five years ago, many functions have been added to the record to make physicians’ work easier, including the Results Manager, faxing prescriptions and clinical messaging capabilities. The latest release of LMR included enhancements to notes and medication usability. The additional capabilities of annotated diagrams and scanning were included and will be prioritized and scheduled along with the rest of the rollouts.
LMR training opportunities include an online LMR Web computer based training module, some LMR modules have recorded training sessions or an LMR analyst can attend staff meetings for training.
“LMR allows physicians to work more efficiently,” said Karen Whitman, team leader for LMR implementation and support at BWH. “The ultimate goal of the LMR is to assist in providing the best patient care.”
