OR’s Filipino Nurses Share Traditional Food and Express Thanks

The OR celebrated Filipino Independence Day June 12 in style. Marifaith Pahang, RN, Imelda Besid, Jonathan Torremoro, RN, Jacqueline Johnson, Minerva Preza Bareng, Marilou Gaudette, Simon Navarro and Ruby Villaluz are among the Filipino nurses who work in the OR, and they shared with co-workers traditional Filipino cuisine and stories about their country.
“We wanted to introduce our culture to co-workers, but mostly we organized the luncheon to thank everyone in the OR for their friendship and for making us feel connected,” Bareng said.
The luncheon included lumpia, fresh or fried spring rolls, pansit, a Filipino noodle dish, putos, kaldereta, beef stew with special sauce, and leche flan, puto and pichi-pichi for dessert, all of which are common dishes served in the Philippines. While OR doctors, nurses and staff enjoyed the delicious food, the nurses also taught them about the national Filipino language and regional dialects, and showed them photographs of scenic areas in the Philippines.
