Lakatos, Mitchell Join As Psychiatric Nursing Managers


Barbara Lakatos, APRN BC, and Monique Mitchell, APRN BC, have joined BWH as Program Managers of the Psychiatric Nursing Resource Service. Both Lakatos and Mitchell are Advanced Practice Nurses who will focus on developing a program of care to meet the ongoing psychological nursing care needs of patients and families and the educational needs of nurses. They will work collaboratively with nurses and the multidisciplinary team to assist in the care of the hospitalized patient.
Staff nurses on the start up units (7AB, 14ABCD, 15ABCD) can directly access t the psychiatric nursing resource service. By joining the nurses at the bedside in assessing patients, Lakatos and Mitchell will assist in developing a personalized plan of care to ultimately improve patient outcomes and the caregiver experience.
Educational modules about the psychological care of patients in the acute care environment are being developed. The modules will be available on Health Stream and offers CEU’s for nurses. The foundation modules are Mental Status Assessment and Delirium. Additionally, a hospital-wide interest group will be formed to look at standardizing nursing assessments for psychologically based care.
“We hope to improve the comfort level of caregivers and the psychological nursing care provided to patients and their families,” Mitchell said.
Lakatos earned her BSN from West Virginia Wesleyan College and her MSN from Boston College School of Nursing with advance practice certification. She brings to BWH extensive experience in Psychiatric nursing and has a variety of roles, including case management, consult/liaison, educator, outpatient and inpatient psychotherapist and manager. She has held various clinical nursing positions at Massachusetts General Hospital, Faulkner Hospital and New England Medical Center. Before joining BWH, she was the Psychiatric Program manager at the Hartford Hospital Center of Excellence.
Mitchell earned her BSN from Fitchburg State College and her MSN from Northeastern University. She too has an advanced practice certification. She brings many years of experience in psychiatric nursing in a variety of roles, including nurse manger, educator, crisis program manger, consult/liaison and outpatient psychopharmacology. She has held positions at Boston Medical Center, McLean Hospital and most recently at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Both have lectured extensively on their research interests which include delirium, alcohol withdrawal, depression and the psychological care and management of patients in the acute care setting.
