Borus Receives MPS Award for Advancement of Psychiatry
Jonathan F. Borus, MD, chair of the BW/F Department of Psychiatry, in May received the 2006 Outstanding Psychiatrist Award for Advancement of the Profession from the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society (MPS). This award recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves as leaders in clinical, academic and administrative psychiatry.
Borus has been an educator and leader in the field of psychiatry throughout his career. In 1997 he won the Seymour Vestermark Award from the American Psychiatric Association and National Institute of Mental Health for leadership in psychiatric education, in 1998 the Harvard Medical School Award for Lifetime Excellence in Mentoring, and in 2004 the Association for Academic Psychiatry Lifetime Achievement Award. He was editor of Academic Psychiatry, the journal of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training and the Association for Academic Psychiatry, from 1989 to1994. As chair of Psychiatry at BWH, Borus has helped integrate outpatient and consultation liaison mental health and substance abuse services, with inpatient and partial hospital services across BWH and Faulkner Hospital. This year he has co-chaired the Partners GME 2015 Task Force, is the new chair the BWH Education Committee and co-chairs the Partners Education Committee.
The MPS is a non-profit professional organization for more than 1,700 physician psychiatrists throughout Massachusetts. It is dedicated to providing superior psychiatric care through accurate diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of mental illnesses.
